Preparation and maintenance of the MTB trails
Every year, even though the ski season has drawn to a close, the resort teams carry on working hard to prepare for the summer season. Today, we’ve decided to follow the preparation and maintenance of the MTB trails in the Belleville valley.
But firstly, what makes a good all terrain bike trail?
Just like the ski slopes in winter, good MTB trails are adapted to suit all levels of cyclists. A wide, easy blue run will be perfect for beginners, whilst a black run will be narrower and more technical; it might just be a little path through the mountain pastures.
A good trail is a «clean» trail, which requires important maintenance work; clearing the paths, making them safe, removing any dangerous stones, repairing any damage caused by storms, putting up signs...
A good trail is also a fun trail with raised turns or jumps that link together well. The aim is to give riders a way of playing with the terrain, having fun and enjoying the amazing views.
Never tried MTB before?
If you would like to give MTB a go (and I strongly recommend that you do !), here are a few useful tips.
As with any new activity, you will probably feel a mixture of fear and excitement at the start of each trail… That will soon be replaced by a sensation of gliding and speed, much like you experience when skiing, as you transfer your body weight to one side in a raised bend, or the thrill you feel when you carry out a jump.
When you start cycling, it’s important to get the right equipment. Never set off without protective gear for your back and knees, as well as gloves and a helmet. Make sure you wear a full-face helmet, which gives you better protection. All of this can be hired in resort.
To really get the most out of it and to progress quickly, book a session with one of the MCF instructors at the Belleville mountain guides office; they will give you a warm welcome and will be thrilled to help you discover the valley.
We’ve got two unmissable MTB events are in store for you this summer:
The 3 Vallées Addict Tour, which takes place in July, and which allows you to discover the 3 Vallées MTB area by bike during fun and timed events, as well as an MTB rando session for everyone on the Sunday.
Les Menuires plays host to the Enduro des Belleville in August. This is a fantastic enduro event with several timed stages throughout the whole valley. If you want to find out more, go to our Facebook page: Bikepark vallée des Belleville.
