10 years of Jazz à Vienne photos

The first edition of jazz-rhone-alpes.com was published on 28 June 2007 to introduce the 27th edition of Jazz à Vienne. Over the years, a strong team of photographers has been built up. Every year, around fifteen of them take it in turns to cover Jazz à Vienne. This exhibition is a selection of the past ten years at Vienne… and a ticket to the next ten years.

Fascinated by the great soul and funk music icons as well as American TV series since childhood, Charlie, an eccentric figure in a top hat, orchestrates his own soap opera. He and his band members take us into a dense, warm world of highly-charged, sometimes raging, sometimes melancholy soul music. The band Charlie and the Soap Opera will be playing at Val Thorens in a reduced format (trio) - Charlies’s Secret.

Buena Vista Social Club:  a documentary film directed by Wim Wenders. It follows the five members of the band from the first film on their way to a final tour in their hometown of Havana in Cuba. The film show will be followed by a mini-concert by the band Barrio Combo, who perform unusual, explosive music based on Cuban, gypsy, cumbia and bolero traditions.

Dj Harry Cover has been a dangerous and completely addicted collector of cover versions for ten years or so, and describes himself as a ‘trafficker of recycled music’, not a real DJ which is far too serious and pretentious for his liking! Harry Cover lets you (re)discover past and present hits in versions which are new, funny, sometimes stupid and above all utterly amazing.

China Moses has inherited her mother Dee Dee Bridgewater’s energy and powerful swing, and has an unparalleled timbre of voice coupled with intense stage presence. China has her mother’s fiery passion and has mastered the art of story-telling, inherited from her father, the director Gilbert Moses. From soul to jazz and the blues, China devours scores with a contagious appetite. She dresses her art in untold, amusing stories, those of stars that she passionately recounts in the first person and those of songs that she spins out like metaphorical friends.

11 pm onwards: JazzMix

Dowdelin is a trio who perform contemporary soul music in the Creole language. The three musicians produce a stylish blend of French Caribbean music and Afro-American influences, attempting to sketch out a Creole Afro-futurism. Dowdelin was formed in October 2016, when singer Olivya, originally from Martinique, met multi-instrumentalist producer David Kiledjian.

Thursday 12 April

11 am Talk

As well as playing his own and other people’s music on stage, pianist Fabrice Tarel is also fond of improving people’s understanding of jazz by giving talks. He graduated in jazz piano from Leeds College of Music in England and has recorded various albums, including three as a trio (Fabrice Tarel Trio in 2007, Praise of Quietness in 2010 and Whirl in 2014).

1 pm Après-ski

Chalet Caron terrace

Da Break is composed of three Lyon artists who are used to working together - Bruno Hovart aka Patchworks, singer Jennifer Hawa Zonou and drummer Rémy Kaprielan. The band members perform boom bap soul in tribute to their shared hip hop culture.

4 pm Après-ski

Named after an ancestral wind which has carried grains of Saharan sand to the Alps for millennia, the trio Foehn takes you on a musical journey seen from above like in a Miyasaki film. The compositions come alive with a mixture of rhythms, exploring delicate harmonies and with occasional shades of pop, to champion the jazz of today, modelled on the Esbjorn Svenson and Shaï Maestro trios, and the music of Tigran Hamasyan and Lars Danielson, among others.

6 pm concert for youngsters

J. Fontanet Forum

‘Nanan’ is a word which comes from old colloquial French. It was mainly used when telling children “if you’re good, you’ll get a treat (a ‘nanan’)”. It refers to something lovely and delicious. Nanan wants children to think of their music as the most delicious sweet ever! Children can join in with each piece with their hands, their bodies, their voices, their brothers, sisters, parents... and there’s a real exchange between the musicians and their audience. The show is 50 minutes long and suitable for youngsters, from 1 to 101 years old.

8 pm concert €27 - €32

Church / Polycultural hall

Kyle Eastwood quintet, In Transit

Jazz runs in the Eastwood family, passed on from father to son. Clint introduced Kyle to 78 records by the likes of Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Buddy Rich and Kyle decided to make it his life. He continued playing his bass guitar and double bass until he achieved an excellent reputation for himself. His music is an invigorating mix of pure jazz, rhythmical electro-jazz and catchy funk – never boring! The musicians who play with him are there for a reason. His new album silences once and for all the spiteful tongues who said that Kyle Eastwood was no more than his father’s son.
